Changuu Island, a short boat ride from Stone Town. Giant tortoises, an old British prison, snorkel off the pier.
The Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a popular tourist destination located off the coast of Stone Town. Originally intended to hold rebellious slaves, it was later used as a quarantine station. Today it’s home to a colony of giant Aldabra tortoises donated by the Seychelles in 1919.
Runs year-round, though we may reshuffle the order depending on wind, tide, and crowds. If you want something even quieter, ask about our off-peak versions — same places, fewer other boats.
